Hippo's Sneeze

Later on this week we are reading a poem about how a hippo sneezes.  Before we read it, how do you think the author describes the sneeze?  Leave a comment with your ideas.  Don't forget to put your name after your comment.

Oral language time this morning

Look at how we are all active contributors in our groups this morning. We have to think about the purpose if a house and what they must have in them. It is so exciting to hear awesome conversations and everyone sharing their ideas.

Geometry

We have been learning about the 2D shapes: square, triangle, oblong, oval, circle, diamond, pentagon, hexagon and octagon .  We need to be able to name these and then describe them using the words straight, curved, long, short, corners, and sides.  We worked together to make the different shapes.
Can you name and describe the shapes we have made?
How would you describe a hexagon or an octagon?

We sometimes play our feely bag game.  This is where someone is holding a shape in a bag which the rest of us can't see through.  They have to describe it to us and we have to make a picture in our head to see if we can work out the shape.

Can you and your family make any more of these shapes and email them in so we can put them on our blog?  It might be tricky to make a hexagon or octagon unless you have lots of people or arms in your family!

Gymnastics and Support Staff Day

We had lots of fun at Gymnastics today in the hall.  The mums and dads helped us.  We went through a tunnel, under the parachute, and then through the shapes.  Then we got to move to a new station.  We had to be a pencil and roll along the mat with straight legs.  We also used the balance rocker.  It was tricky to make it move backwards and forwards with a partner sitting on it.  At the next station we walked and jumped with both feet up onto a box.  When we jumped off it we had to land like we were on a motorbike.  At the next station we had a balancing beam and the hedgehogs.  It was tricky to do a heel toe walk up so high in the air.  When we jumped off the beam we had to land like a motorbike as well.  At the last station we had to jump the hurdles and balance an egg on a spoon.  We also had to run through a long ladder on the ground.  We hope that the parents that came to help us had a lot of fun too!
It was also Support Staff Day today.  We celebrated the work that Mrs Perry does around our school.  We treated her with some orchids and a fabulous card that we made.  It had paper flowers with chocolate centres and our smiley faces inside.  She does a great job at our school helping children with their learning.

News today

Andrew told us all about making a plane at Keas. We wondered if it would fly and it did!
Jackson told us about his Lego characters.
Oliver told us about Meccano. You can make it into anything you want to.
Elsie told us about making a book in the library. She wrote in it at home and Ruby ticked all the correct sounds.
We wondered how she made it so she told us. Yone asked Elsie to read it to us and we clapped.
Ella also made a book but she got to stay up late to make it.
Yone told us about the new silver car that her mum bought yesterday.
Emma told us about her headband that her mum bought for her. She also shared her movie The Wizard of Oz. She told us about what happens and tried to sing the song.
Jess told us about a book that her and Misha have been making.

Oliver's Aeroplane

Oliver brought his aeroplane to school to show us. He made it last night and some parts were a little bit tricky.
We had lots of questions to ask Oliver.
Where did you get all the materials from? (Josh)
My Dad paid for it at the Warehouse.
How did you make the wings for it to make it fly? (Benjamin)
My Dad made the propeller because it was tricky for me.
How did you screw those screws in? (Jackson)
There was a spanner to do it to do these nuts up.
So it must be little? (Jackson)
Yes.
Can you play with it? (Yone)
Yes
And does it break? (Yone)
Yes it can but you can put all the parts off it and there are batteries in it here at the front.
And then the power moves? (Jordan)
And it always runs out of batteries.

We thought that Oliver showed perseverance while he made it. It had lots of little parts. Thanks for bringing it in to share with us Oliver.

Speed Stacking

Today at Discovery Time we began to look at the value of Perseverance.
One of our activities was to try speed stacking because we had been shown some very clever instructions by the children from Room 9.  You can see their videos here roomnineroydvale.blogspot.co.nz

We tried and tried to make our time faster and learnt how to video ourselves using Photo Booth.  Now Miss Browne needs to persevere and get our blog to love putting up videos.  The picture above is of Hayden in Room one who could stack his cups and then unstack them in 18 seconds.  Hopefully we will be able to see this video soon...

Writing Instructions

We made Hairy McLeary.

If you want to make a Hairy McLeary this is what you need to do:
1. Colour in a Hairy McLeary.
2. Cut out Hairy McLeary.
3. Make another Hairy McLeary.
4. Staple the two Hairy McLeary's together but DO NOT staple the tummy.
5. Scrunch up the paper from the outside of Hairy McLeary.
6. Put it inside Hairy McLeary.
7. Staple the tummy together.

Now your Hairy McLeary is made. You can play with him gently otherwise he will break.

We used our Hairy McLeary to show different instructions on the playground. We are making a movie that we hope to share with you by the end of the week. Keep coming back to see it!
